In White and Khaki: Selected Rhymes
Manila, Kemlein & Johnson, 1908. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Green cloth, stamped in blind and white. Light shelf wear but in very good condition overall. Signature of Cusater Hanks, Battery A 5th Regt. US Field Artillery and dated May 1908 in the Philippines. Scarce collection of poetry dealing with the American occupation of the Philippines in the early 20th century. Includes the author's most famous poem "You're Always in the Way". Price, a private in the US Army Hospital Corps, wrote the poem as a scathing indictment of an officer who ordered this song played at the funeral of a young US Marine. Price was arrested and scheduled to be court-martialed but the weight of Army opinion was strong enough that the charges were dropped. The officer who ordered the song played was courtmartialed but acquitted. .
